4 springtime driving hazards

Springtime is here! The snow is melting, the flowers are blooming and the birds are chirping. But even as the snow goes away until next winter, there are still some seasonal driving hazards in the springtime.

You may assume that driving in the spring is safe with better weather all around, but that is not always true. Here are some spring driving dangers to watch out for and how to stay safe and avoid car wrecks.

1. Rain and floods

The saying, "Spring showers bring May flowers" is true. This time of year is notorious for a lot of rain. Wet roads and slippery conditions may result in an unfortunate accident. When it rains, it reduces the traction of your car and increases the stopping distance. Flooding may also occur, creating large puddles and causing hydroplaning. One of the most crucial safety tips for driving in the spring is simply slowing down.

2. Worn-out roads

Ohio roads take a beating during the winter. This results in some serious wear and tear. Snow plows, salt and ice melting away may leave the streets in tatters. Watch out for potholes and avoid them as much as you can.

3. More motorcyclists and pedestrians

Now that the weather is improving, people are coming out in droves to enjoy it. You will notice more people on their motorcycles, bicycles or just walking around. Make sure you are ready to share the road with two-wheeled vehicles and give pedestrians the right-of-way at crosswalks.

4. Animal activity

Humans are not the only ones who like to go for a stroll in the spring. You may see more bears, deer and other animals out and about. Many of these animals are especially active during dawn or dusk.

Spring brings rain, potholes and an overall increase in activity. Stay alert of these hazardous conditions so you can enjoy your commutes and spring road trips safely.
